Progress 1 was first supply mission to the IOSS, and the only unmanned mission to be launched to the station, while the station itself was unmanned. Progress 1 also featured the only time a Progress vehicle would use the front port on the Soyuz/Progress Docking Module, after this mission, the port was used exclusively by the Automated Transfer Vehicle. The role of Progress 1 was to provide additional fuel for the station, and to ensure supplies and equipment were in place for the first permanent station crew.
